1974

The Beginning

Parker Teel and Peter Gundlach started T&G Enterprises, Inc. The company focused on new home construction, additions and small commercial projects.

1978

Pre-Incorporated

Parker Teel Construction Company (PTCC) forms with Parker Teel as sole proprietor. Notable projects: Chez Francois and River Club

1985

First Major Project

Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. awards PTCC demolition and structural portions of the Tysons Corner Mall redevelopment, converting the lower level truck driveway/storage into tenant spaces. PTCC was subsequently awarded over a dozen tenant build-outs following the conversion. TEEL has been on the property as a preferred contractor ever since.

1987

PTCC incorporated to TEEL Construction

On December 2nd, PTCC incorporated to TEEL Construction, Inc. and moved into a new office space at 768 Walker Road in Great Falls, VA. The company would be headquartered there for the next 28 years.

1988

First Million

The company cleared its first $1.0M in April while completing the build-out of Bice Ristorante at 60l Pennsylvania Ave, NW.

1989

Going Nationwide

Bice Ristorante in Atlanta , GA marked the first out-of-state project for TEEL.

1990

From red to black

Bloomingdale’s facade renovation at Tysons Corner Center took TEEL from red to black. First year of operation (FYE 9/30/88) booked $1.8M in revenue.

1992

Macy’s & Bloomingdale’s

Macy’s/Bloomingdale’s work begins. TEEL has completed over 300 projects for Federated Department Stores (as of December, 2017). TEEL’s completion of Butterfield 9 Restaurant in NW, DC wins an AIA Award of Excellence.

1994

Base Buildings

TEEL became a base building contractor for the first time at the Factory Stores Shopping Center in Hershey, PA and became known for more than interior space renovations.

1995

Enter Grocery Stores

Satellite office in Hershey, PA opens. TEEL begins working at Dulles International Airport while completing terminal work for Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority (MWAA). TEEL built its first ground-up Weis Markets store in Lebanon, PA.

1997

New Milestone

TEEL began working with Douglas Development on 6010 Executive Boulevard in Rockville, MD. The company clears $10M in September.

1998

Inns

TEEL built a 5-story Country Inn & Suites in Lawrenceville, GA. The project marked the 8th ground-up hotel in TEEL’s portfolio. Several additional Country Inn & Suites, Sleep Inns, Microtels, Hampton Inns, and Holiday Inns were completed in the late 90’s. TEEL was awarded its first educational project with Notre Dame Academy in Washington, DC. Hershey, PA office phased out.

1999

IAD

TEEL completed its first airport retail store — America! at Dulles International Airport. The first modifications of TEEL’s headquarters were made to accommodate a larger staff. The company clears $15M in September.

2002

Educational Sector

The first Kaplan job was awarded to TEEL in DC. Over 250 projects throughout the country valued at over $40M would be completed through the next 12 years under Kaplan’s various programs including Score!, Kaplan Test Prep, Kaplan University, Kaplan International, and Kaplan Higher Education.

2005

Our Largest at the Time

In June, TEEL was awarded the Foxchase Shopping Center redevelopment for Washington Real Estate Investment Trust. The project marks TEEL’s largest project as of December, 2017, just under $10M.

2006

Going International

TEEL goes international on sovereign soil with the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt addition and renovation in Northwest, DC. Paper Source’s national roll out begins with TEEL completing 15 projects over the next 4 years throughout the East Coast.

2008

The Recession

TEEL begins work with The Rappaport Companies. Kaplan carries TEEL through the recession and accounts for nearly 75% of the company’s book. While many GC’s are laying people off, TEEL was hiring.

2010

Airport Restaurants

Vino Volo Dulles International Airport marks TEEL’s first airport restaurant. The high-end restaurant and bar, Circa Clarendon in Arlington, VA is awarded.

2011

Over 100 Projects Booked

Morgan Stanley (MSSB) begins with the 1st job in Charleston, WV. Over 30 projects valued at $7M would be completed over the next 3 years. Over 100 jobs are booked FY 2011.

2012

The Retail Era

TEEL begins work with Zadig and Voltaire in Aventura, FL. The successful completion of this project would lead to the completion of Zadig’s Canadian roll-out in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver. TEEL begins working with Lord & Taylor on shopin- shops on the East Coast. This begins negotiations with Saks Off 5th jobs that would begin 4 years later in 2016.

2013

Repeat Clients & Tysons Corner Center

Smashburger national roll-out begins with the Dupont Circle build-out. 21 jobs valued over $7.5M have been completed as of December, 2017. ALDI begins with a facade paint job in Edgewood, MD. Over 90 projects valued over $60M have been completed for this client as of December, 2017. TEEL completes Tysons Corner Center Phase I Common Corridor Renovation. Phase III would be completed 2 years later.

2014

PNC

EDENS begins with the Angelika Film Center Pop-up at Union Market. Over 25 jobs valued at $10.5M have been completed as of December, 2017. TEEL completes 7 restaurants at DCA/IAD concurrently, pulling half of the company’s personnel on the projects. TEEL’s 1st ground-up ALDI in Waynesboro, VA is completed and marks its 1st ground-up project since Foxchase in 2005. PNC work begins. TEEL begins CM agreement with WashREIT.

2015

CBN Businessman of the Year

In December, the new Fairfax headquarters opens to support the company’s growth. The 2nd and 3rd floor office is designed to accommodate 9 additional people. These seats would quickly be accounted for over the next 18 months. Chillum and Channing marks TEEL’s 1st medical marijuana facility. Lincoln Memorial roof repair was completed for the National Park Service. Parker is acknowledged as the CBN Businessman of the Year. The company clears $20M in May, $25M in June, $30M in July, and $35M in August.

2016

NYC

Signed lease in May for TEEL’s Midtown Manhattan satellite office to support our NYC-based customers. Our Vice President, Joe Ellingsworth celebrates his 25-year tenure with TEEL. Work with Dominion Power, Pret A Manger, and HSBC begins. The company clears $40M at the FYE and crosses the 50 employee mark.

2017

The Year of Aldi

The “Year of ALDI” represented 38 projects booked and completed in DC, MD, NC, PA and VA. In October, Parker Teel assumed title of CEO and Spencer Teel was named President. The first floor expansion opens in November to allow our team to continue our growth. The company clears $55M at the FYE and crosses the 70 employee mark.

2018

Women in Construction

The company has 10 women in the organization TEEL was brought in to build Washington Golf & Country Clubs halfway house, the company's first country club project. TEEL enters into a collaboration agreement with Heidenberger Construction, Inc. [HCI] adding 5 new staff and the SCI Funeral Homes account to the team. The company books over $60M in revenues, earning a place on the Washington Business Journal’s Top 30 Largest General Contractors List.

2019

Our SOP’s

After 8 months of planning and a massive team effort, the company’s Standard Operating Procedures are rolled out. The company held its 1st Trade Partner Appreciation Day [TPAD] After 20 years with Insurance Associates, the company signs on with Delmarva Surety. Our Senior Superintendent role is established, leading to the promotion of 7 superintendents who had been with the company for 5+ years. With 4 jobs in progress for KinderCare valued over $11M, our educational client became our 3rd largest customer for the year.

2020

LIDL

TEEL begins work with LIDL – Chantilly becomes a landmark project at $5.8M. Richmond, VA satellite branch established. COVID-19 pandemic hits. Over $49M of bids were either cancelled or indefinitely postponed due to the pandemic. Bonding capacity increased to $85M aggregate in the middle of the pandemic, highlighting the company’s financial strength. Westwood Country Club in Vienna, VA becomes the company’s 2nd landmark project booked for the year. Overall volume of work bid crossed the $300M threshold for the first time.

We look forward to seeing Leslie continue to innovate our company and build new relationships while taking her career and TEEL to the next level. Leslie has quickly learned the “TEEL Way” after 2 years at TEEL. She started with us May, 2016 after coming from a GC in Florida under the Assistant Project Manager role.

Interesting Fact: Leslie competed in gymnastics for nearly 20 years and attended the Junior Olympics.

Brian Abel

Director of Project Management

Professional Expertise: Brian spent the last 17 years bidding, negotiating and successfully managing small to medium base buildings and interior renovations in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. Brian has primarily focused on financial services, healthcare, corporate interiors, religious institutions and country clubs. Brian’s success and loyal customer base have been attributed to excellent communication and attention to detail in all facets of the construction process.

Deborah Magano

Director of Field Operations

Professional Expertise: Deborah’s passion is everything construction. She started a small GC company after graduating in Florida and one of her first successful projects was a restaurant/coffeehouse. She then relocated to the Washington DC area in 1994 and started DMI Development Group. She acquired clients throughout the US and Europe and then after 18 years, retired from the residential business to become a commercial construction manager before finding her forever home at TEEL Construction.

Interesting Fact: Deborah paid her way through college by painting concrete roofs in Florida and was instantly hooked and knew she wanted to be in construction for the rest of her life.

Brian Philpot

Vice President of Preconstruction

Professional Expertise: Brian spent six years within the U.S. Army Intelligence Community. Afterwards, he worked on government construction projects with Fluor Global Engineering and Kellogg, Brown & Root in the Middle East and Central Asia. Brian joined TEEL’s estimating team in 2015 and transitioned into project management in 2016. Brian is currently back leading our Estimating team as VP of Preconstruction.

Adam Turner

Vice President of Construction

Professional Expertise: Adam is the 3rd generation in his family working in the construction industry, starting for his father’s company in high school working hands-on in residential additions and custom homes. He moved into commercial construction in 2006 starting as a Superintendent. Adam grew into project management, and has worked his way up to TEEL’s Vice President of Construction in 2022.

Parker Teel

Chairman of the Board

Professional Expertise: Founded TEEL in 1987

Notable Projects: 

Tysons Corner Center: Whiting-Turner hired Parker Teel Construction Co. (prior to TEEL’s incorporation) as a subcontractor in the mid-80s to complete the re-demising work of the shopping center when the floor was converted from truck delivery/storage space to mall tenant and common area space. When the redevelopment was substantially complete, the company picked up many of the associated retail tenant build-outs. TEEL has been working at the mall in one capacity or another ever since.

Spencer Teel

President & CEO

Professional Expertise: Spencer began working with TEEL in 1997 where he spent summer breaks as a laborer and assistant superintendent in high school, transitioning into a superintendent during college recesses. After graduating from Christopher Newport University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 2005, Spencer worked as a project manager for 8 years. He was promoted to vice president in 2013 where he served 4 years before being named president in October, 2017. Spencer’s primary duties include strategic planning, culture building and oversight of the principal leadership team.  He serves as project executive on the firm’s landmark projects.
